Full Life, Empty Trash Bin

How and why to choose sustainable consumption over wasteful consumerism

presented by Environmental Forum of Marin

March 24, 2021

4:00 - 5:30 pm

This event will be followed by a lunchtime discussion on Thursday, March 25, Noon – 1:00 pm. This discussion is included in your ticket price. Details will follow.

For most of us, when we throw things “away”, we don't really know what or where “away” might be. In this webinar you’ll learn where those garbage trucks take your trash, recycling, and green waste, what happens to it, and how it impacts our environment. We’ll also hear zero-waste lifestyle expert Lily Cameron talk about how you can stop waste where it starts: in the decisions you make even before you go to the store. Come and get inspired about sustainable consumption — defined as meeting our needs now without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

What are the issues?

  • If everyone consumed as much as Marinites do, we would need five Earths to supply all the necessary resources
  • If global food waste were a country, it would be the third highest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China
  • Recycling recovers only a fraction of the waste we put in those special bins
  • Marin’s diversion rate has decreased from 75% in 2012 to the mid-60s now
  • Bio plastics are presented as a solution, but they’re a new problem

What are the solutions?

  • Get to know what should be put in your trash, recycling and compost bins
  • Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot
  • Avoid trash on the go with a zero waste kit
  • Plan and prep meals to eliminate food waste
  • Shop smart to minimize packaging
  • Rethink gift giving
