The First Thursday Conversation on the Environment for June 5, 2008, will feature Jon Elam, general manager of Tamalpais Community Services District (TCSD), a public local government unit that provides park and recreation, refuse, and sanitary sewer collection services to an area of 2500 homes and a population of 7000 in Southern Marin. With an elected 5-member board, TCSD is the only publicly operated garbage collection program in Marin County, and is widely regarded as a leader in reduction, re-use, and recycling of residential waste streams. President's Message

Environmental Forum of Marin is entering it's thirty-fifth year of operation-promoting a sustainable world through environmental education-in amazingly robust organizational health. I am delighted to be taking the helm at such a time. We have grown from providing environmental education and advocacy training to concerned Marin residents to one serving trainees, members and the public-at-large with outreach into the greater Bay Area.

As a result, EFM is in the enviable position of having many attractive opportunities for furthering its mission through its unique holistic and unbiased approach to environmental education. We must choose carefully which to pursue. So, building on the success of those who accomplished the objectives set out in EFM's 2003-2006 strategic plan, the newly initiated EFM board voted last night to pursue a strategic planning initiative which will set our course for the next three (or so) years. Please wish us well. Vicki Rupp

Please join us for EFM's FIRST THURSDAY, Jon Elam, general manager of Tamalpais Community Services District (TCSD), will lead the conversation. June 5, 2008 Time: 7 to 9 p.m. Location: CVNL/MarinSpace, 555 Northgate Drive, San Rafael Click the first item on the left, below IN THIS ISSUE, for details.

Apology For Omission We would like to welcome the following 2008 Sustainable Communities Seminar EFM Associate Members whose names were inadvertently omitted from the Annual Report listing: Karen Loida, Katie Cartwright, Kimberly Pinkson, Laura Merlo, Maeve Murphy.

Anuual Meeting and Luncheon Closes the Door on Year 35

David and Phyllis/Annual luncheon

This year's annual meeting and luncheon on May 16 was a grand success. Outgoing President David McConnell (27) graciously led the meeting, as well as the tribute to the founders, most of whom were in the crowd to accept their honors.

Incoming President (and outgoing Treasurer) Vicki Rupp(33) presented great news on our budget.

The meeting adjourned and open discussion ensued. Many graduates thanked the EFM, and Chrise deTournay Birkhahn(35)--our new publications chair--unveiled the hot-off-the-press newsletter and called for submissions by all members for all future publications. Valerie Merrin (and Barbara O'Grady(31) discussed the Committee to Inspire Advocacy, another way to keep members involved and spread the word. David closed with a request that members identify the up-and-comers in the community and tell them about the EFM. Thus we turned the last page in our 35th year of incomparable advocacy training and welcomed the next chapter in the history of the Environmental Forum of Marin.

Change is in the Air!

As we move into late Spring, signs of the season are evident at EFM. The annual meeting and luncheon having officially closed the door on year 35, planning for the Class of 36 is now underway, including one of several coordinators' meetings, held May 7. Thanks to lots of good input, the schedule is being re-tooled a bit, clustering classes and related subjects together. Most coordinators will be returning, but we'll also have a few new ones. The idea of a mentoring group is also being explored, and has met with some initial agreement.

This year's Sustainable Earth Forum, an 18-week series, begins on September 9. As always, the Forum will focus on sustainability, ecology, human impacts on the environment, resource management, and citizen and community action, with the goal of providing knowledge to individuals who are, or who would like to be, involved in making decisions affecting their community. Last year's assistant director, Kim Sauve (34), now takes the director's reins, with EFM grad Marcia Sitcoske (35) at her side. It promises to be another great year in EFM's 36th year of service and training. The $380 fee covers all costs and includes a one-year EFM membership. Registration is now open; enrollment is limited. Have You Seen The Baby Barn Owl Cam At The Marin Art & Garden Education Center?

Four rescued baby barn owls are being fostered by Marin Art and Garden Center Charlotte Torgovitsky, (MAGC) education director, and the Hungry Owl Project, in a box at MAGC, along with a fifth owlet that was the only survivor of four chicks that got blown out of a palm tree.

Volunteers deliver food to the boxes each day, as the owlets can feed themselves now. Because of the extreme heat in Marin County recently, the little owlets were quite hot in their feather down. When a volunteer went up the ladder to deliver the food a wet towel is placed over the roof of the box to try and cool things down a bit for them. You may see the owlets with their wings out and mouths open--that is to release heat. Or they will just lie flat and not move much. The barn owl cam at MAGC is sponsored by Clay Station Wines!
